Cupping Q & A

What is cupping?

Cupping is an ancient Chinese therapy that involves placing cups on the skin and creating a suction effect to draw up blood to the surface of the skin. In modern times, cupping therapy has gained popularity as a form of alternative medicine and is often used to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and well-being.

Dry cupping

Dry cupping without heat, also known as “air cupping,” involves creating suction in the cups without using heat. This is typically achieved through a manual pump or by using a technique that involves creating a vacuum by removing the air from the cup. The cups are then placed on the skin to create a suction effect, and this practice is often used in traditional Chinese medicine and other alternative therapies.

What conditions can cupping treat?

Many believe that cupping, an ancient practice, balances the body's yin and yang elements to boost the immune system and alleviate chronic pain. At Healing Duo Integrative Family Medical Practice, our providers use cupping to create suction on the skin, increasing blood circulation in specific areas. This treatment is beneficial for:

  • Relieving muscle tension
  • Promoting cellular repair
  • Forming new blood vessels
  • Creating new connective tissues

The team at Healing Duo Integrative Family Medical Practice may recommend cupping with or without acupuncture to treat digestive issues such as bloating and chronic pain conditions like herniated discs and spondylosis.

What can I expect during a cupping session?

During an air cupping session at Healing Duo Integrative Family Medical Practice, our providers use suction to create a vacuum that lifts the skin and muscle tissue into the cup. Multiple cups may be placed on specific pressure points around your body, and they are left in place for up to 10 minutes before removal.

How does cupping affect my skin?

Please take note of the following information:

You may experience skin redness due to pressure changes in your blood vessels from the suction. You may also notice mild bruising that resolves on its own within a few days.

After your treatment, you can resume your usual activities without any limitations. However, some people may experience a period of dizziness or lightheadedness immediately after a cupping procedure.
